Biography

Patrick Newell (1932–1988) was a British character actor. He was educated at Taunton School and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art alongside Albert Finney and Peter O'Toole, after completing National Service with Michael Caine.

Newell appeared frequently on television, notably as the spymaster Mother in The Avengers (1965–1969). His film and television credits include Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) as Bentley Bobster, A Study in Terror (1965) as PC Benson, Becket (1964), and roles in Doctor Who, The Persuaders! and The Young Ones. He also played Inspector Lestrade in the 1980 series Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and Blessington in the 1984–1985 Sherlock Holmes series.

He was married to Derina House from 1959 until his death from a heart attack in Essex in 1988.
