Pauline McLynn's comic strength is the firmness with which she plays people who interfere. In Father Ted, her Mrs Doyle gives the ensemble something solid to work against, even when the broad jokes begin to repeat themselves.

Mrs Doyle is devoted to tea, and Pauline McLynn gives that devotion the seriousness of a job that must be done properly. In Father Ted (1995), her firmness survives whatever foolishness the other performers put around it. We laughed at that steadiness: the broader the comedy became, the less she seemed inclined to apologise for Mrs Doyle. She lets the character carry on without signalling that she knows how absurd it all is. It is disciplined work in a programme that depends on its performers letting foolishness pass without comment.
Alongside Frank Kelly's Father Jack Hackett, she prevents the programme from becoming solely a partnership. Kelly's blunter force is useful, though Jack's limited variation is where our patience wears thin. McLynn holds up better, and she is a large part of why we recommend the series despite the repetition in its broadest jokes. Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews supply material worth playing straight; she understands how much funnier it is when Mrs Doyle sees no reason to soften her behaviour.
Father Ted brought wider recognition, along with the risk of being reduced to its tea-obsessed housekeeper. The subsequent work includes Aunt Aggie in Angela's Ashes (1999) and the lead role of Helen in Gypo (2005). Her television work has continued to favour ensembles, including soaps, while Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho (2021) gives her the supporting role of Carol. Busybody and maternal parts recur in her casting, often with an acerbic edge. That makes it worth distinguishing what a script asks her to repeat from what she contributes as an actor.
We would still begin with Father Ted, where her ability to make an insistent character belong in a group gets such a thorough workout. A busybody can be a lazy piece of writing, supplied merely to interrupt everyone else. McLynn gives Mrs Doyle enough conviction that we can enjoy her persistence even when the joke is familiar. Just allow for a programme whose fondness for repeating itself occasionally exceeds ours.
Biography
Pauline McLynn is an Irish actress and author. Born in Sligo in 1962, she grew up in Galway and studied History of Art and Modern English at Trinity College Dublin, where she became involved in the student drama society. She began her professional career in theatre with companies including the Abbey and the Gate.
McLynn is best known for playing Mrs Doyle in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted (1995–1998), for which she received the British Comedy Award for Top TV Comedy Actress in 1996. Other notable television roles include Libby Croker in Shameless, Tip Haddem in Jam & Jerusalem, Yvonne Cotton in EastEnders, and Maggie Driscoll in Coronation Street. Her film credits include Angela's Ashes (1999), Quills (2000), Last Night in Soho (2021) and Johnny English Strikes Again (2018). She is married to theatrical agent Richard Cook.
