Biography
Paulo Gil Soares was a Brazilian director, writer and journalist. Born in Salvador, Bahia, he began working in theatre and film cooperatives in the city during the 1950s and collaborated with Glauber Rocha on the Jornal da Bahia and related publications.
He contributed to Rocha’s Black God, White Devil (1964) as co-writer, costume designer, art director and assistant director, and provided costume design for Entranced Earth (1967). Soares directed the documentary Memória do Cangaço (1964) and the fiction feature Proêzas de Satanás na Vila de Leva-e-Traz (1967). He later directed segments for the Caravana Farkas documentaries and worked in television, including as artistic director of Globo Repórter until 1983.
Soares died in Rio de Janeiro in 2000.
