Peter Chakos gives sitcom actors time to land a joke without letting an episode dawdle. We value that precision, though The Big Bang Theory also shows how easily reliable timing can become predictable.

A confident statement hangs for a moment before someone gives it the response it deserves. In The Big Bang Theory (2007), Peter Chakos leaves room for that pause and for the actors to make it count. We value his patient, efficient editing, even when the programme gives him dialogue that scarcely rewards the care. His contribution is easy to overlook because much of it consists of knowing how long to wait.
His editing credits begin with Cheers in 1992, followed by editing and producing Will & Grace (1998). He specialises in multi-camera sitcoms recorded before a live audience, using the audience's immediate response to help select takes and jokes. That makes his work attentive to how a performance actually plays, rather than how a line reads. Director James Burrows has been a recurring collaborator since Cheers.
On The Big Bang Theory, he edited 279 episodes across its 2007–2019 run, took on producing responsibilities and directed seven episodes. Mark Cendrowski was a frequent directing collaborator on the series. The 22-minute episodes are neatly shaped, with space for Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons to establish the comic timing that makes the programme agreeable company. Chakos does not hurry every exchange simply because there is another joke to reach.
We grew impatient when those pauses left us waiting for jokes we had already anticipated. The regularity of the exchanges in The Big Bang Theory can make an efficient edit feel too settled, especially when the writing returns to social awkwardness. That is not a problem we would lay entirely at the editor's door. The dialogue does most of the work here, and a weak exchange remains weak however tidily it fits the episode.
He continued editing and producing with Bob Hearts Abishola (2019) and Mid-Century Modern (2025), the latter reuniting him with Burrows. He has also emphasised the need to let scenes breathe when comedy meets emotion. We would start with The Big Bang Theory to hear how he gives the performers room. Just allow for the blunt jokes; the pauses sometimes give us longer to consider them.
Biography
Peter Chakos is a television editor, producer and director. He began his career as a production assistant on the sitcom Cheers before moving into post-production and editing.
Chakos edited episodes of Will & Grace (1998–2006), Two and a Half Men (2003) and The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019). On the latter he also held producer roles including supervising producer and co-executive producer, and directed seven episodes. He has won four Primetime Emmy Awards for multi-camera picture editing on The Big Bang Theory.
His other credits include editing and producing on Bob Hearts Abishola (2019) and Mid-Century Modern (2025).
