Biography

Sir Peter Shaffer was an English playwright and screenwriter. Born in Liverpool in 1926, he died in 2016. He is best known for his plays Equus (1973) and Amadeus (1979), both of which he adapted as screenplays for their film versions.

The 1977 film of Equus and the 1984 film of Amadeus, directed by Miloš Forman, brought his work to wider audiences. Shaffer received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Amadeus. He was knighted for services to drama.
