Biography
Peter Woodthorpe (1931–2004) was an English character actor whose career spanned stage, film and television. Born in York, he was educated at Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School and Magdalene College, Cambridge, and completed National Service in the Royal Navy before making his professional stage debut in 1955 as Estragon in the first British production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.
Woodthorpe appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and on Broadway. He supplied the voice of Gollum in the 1978 animated The Lord of the Rings and the BBC radio adaptation, and played Reg Trotter in the 1983 Only Fools and Horses Christmas special. On television he portrayed Dr. Max DeBryn in the first two series of Inspector Morse (1987–1988). His film roles included The Blue Max (1966), The Madness of King George (1994) and David Copperfield (2000).
