Biography

Phil Brown was an American actor. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied dramatics at Stanford University and began his stage career with New York's Group Theatre. After moving to Hollywood he appeared in films including The Killers (1946) and helped establish the Actors' Laboratory.

Blacklisted in 1952, Brown relocated to England in 1953 and worked there in theatre, television and film, also directing for stage and screen, until returning to the United States in the 1990s. He is best known for playing Uncle Owen in Star Wars (1977). Other screen credits include The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Superman (1978) and Chaplin (1992). Brown died in 2006.
