Biography

Phil Gries is an American cinematographer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, he studied film production at the City College of New York and earned a master's degree in fine arts in film and television from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Gries has worked extensively on documentaries, features and television. He contributed cinematography to the Holocaust documentary Shoah (1985). Other credits include Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor (1990) and behind-the-scenes work on Wag the Dog (1997). He has photographed numerous BBC documentaries and PBS productions, including the Emmy Award-winning Vermeer: Master of Light (2001) and the Emmy-nominated 88 Seconds in Greensboro (1983). He is also credited as Elroy Brandy on several adult films from the 1980s.
