Biography

Philip Carey (born Eugene Joseph Carey, 15 July 1925 – 6 February 2009) was an American actor. He was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and studied drama at the University of Miami. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War and the Korean War.

Carey began his screen career in the early 1950s with roles in films including Operation Pacific (1951), Calamity Jane (1953), Pushover (1954) and Mister Roberts (1955). On television he appeared in series such as Gunsmoke, Little House on the Prairie and The Bionic Woman, and played Steve, an old friend of Archie Bunker, in the 1971 episode of All in the Family. From 1979 to 2007 he portrayed the patriarch Asa Buchanan in the soap opera One Life to Live.
