Biography
Philippe Lifchitz (1919–2012) was a French film producer and director. He was born in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and died in Ivry-sur-Seine.
In the late 1940s or early 1950s he co-founded the production company Argos Films with Anatole Dauman, with whom he collaborated until around 1970. The company specialised in short documentaries and experimental films.
Lifchitz produced Alain Resnais’s Night and Fog (1956) and Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin’s Chronicle of a Summer (1961), as well as Agnès Varda’s Along the Coast (1958) and Joris Ivens’s Valparaiso (1963). He also directed several short films and later worked in television. In 1960 he received the International Critics’ Prize at the Tours International Short Film Festival.
