Biography
Pierre Charbonnier (1897–1978) was a French production designer, art director, painter and short-film director. Born in Vienne, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the Académie Ranson in Paris. He worked in stage design and made short films from the late 1920s before moving into feature-film production design.
Charbonnier maintained a long collaboration with Robert Bresson, serving as production designer or art director on eight of the director’s films: Diary of a Country Priest (1951), A Man Escaped (1956), Pickpocket (1959), The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962), Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), A Gentle Woman (1969), Four Nights of a Dreamer (1971) and Lancelot of the Lake (1974).
