Biography
Ray Barrett (1927–2009) was an Australian actor. He began acting as a child after studying music and elocution, and became the first actor placed under contract by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s drama section. He worked in radio in Sydney before moving to Britain in 1958, where he appeared in television series including Emergency Ward 10, The Avengers (as Strong) and The Saint.
Barrett was best known in Britain for his role as Peter Thornton in the long-running series The Troubleshooters (1965–1971). He also provided voices for several characters in the puppet series Thunderbirds and Stingray. Returning to Australia in the mid-1970s, he took lead and character roles in films such as The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) and Australia (2008). He received AFI awards for best supporting actor in The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and best actor in Goodbye Paradise (1982), as well as the Raymond Longford Award in 2005.
