Biography
Raymond Walburn was an American character actor who appeared in dozens of Hollywood films, primarily comedies, during the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Plymouth, Indiana, he began his career on stage after moving to California and made his Broadway debut in 1912. He returned to films in the mid-1930s after earlier stage work and a period in the US Army.
Walburn was frequently cast as pompous or bumbling figures and collaborated with directors including Frank Capra and Preston Sturges. His credits include Walter in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sage in The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Dr. Maxford in Christmas in July (1940), Mayor Everett J. Noble in Hail the Conquering Hero (1944) and Judge Alexander in State of the Union (1948). He died in New York City in 1969.
