Fi1m perspective

Reggie Absolom makes Club Kid’s father-son bond believable through humour and an easy rapport with Jordan Firstman. We warmly recommend his performance, even when the film asks that rapport to cover for a change of heart that comes too easily.

In Club Kid (2026), Arlo and Peter enjoy one another’s company, and Reggie Absolom makes that pleasure count. His ease with Jordan Firstman gives their scenes interest beyond the question of whether Peter will become a satisfactory father. We were moved by the affection between them because the humour made it feel like a relationship that both wanted, rather than one the story required. Absolom is funny and affecting, and Arlo never feels like a child included merely to teach an adult a lesson.

The early work runs through shorts, including Dressed to the Nines (2025), in which he plays Luke opposite Daniel Ings, and television parts such as Benny in Silo (2025). There is also George Gardiner in The Other Bennet Sister (2026). Arlo is the substantial step: a lead in Firstman’s feature debut, with the central relationship depending on what Absolom brings to it. That is where our enthusiasm rests, rather than on the length of his credits.

Firstman, as director and co-star, is an important part of the result. Club Kid gave Absolom his first experience of improvising on set, which he found challenging before coming to appreciate it. We would not guess at that difficulty from the ease of his scenes with Firstman. The two actors seem comfortable together, and Absolom has room to contribute to the comedy. The film benefits from allowing Arlo to be enjoyable company, with something to offer beyond making his father a better person.

The film does ask that rapport to do some repair work. Peter’s change of heart comes a little too easily, and believing in the actors together does not make every step of the writing convincing. That is a caveat about Club Kid, not evidence of a weakness in Absolom, whose humour helps keep Arlo from becoming merely useful to his father’s improvement. Start with Club Kid; leave predictions about the rest of his career until there is more work to judge.
