Biography

Richard Braine (born 1956) is a British actor, playwright and theatre director. He was born in Portishead, Somerset.

Braine is known for playing Augustus 'Gussie' Fink-Nottle in the third and fourth series of Jeeves and Wooster (1992–1993) and Rupert Steggles in the first series. Film roles include a policeman in Calendar Girls (2003), a vicar in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) and a theatre patron in Finding Neverland (2004). Television credits include appearances in House of Cards (1990), Foyle's War (2002), Spooks (2002), Victoria (2016) as a tailor, Father Brown (2016) as Henry Kirkov and Hostage (2025) as Speaker of the House. He has had recurring roles in EastEnders as a vicar and funeral director.

As a playwright he wrote and performed the one-man show Being There With Peter Sellers (1997) and the plays Bedding Clay Jones and Sexing Alan Titchmarsh (2001). He directed Steve Martin's The Underpants in 2006.
