Biography
Richard Rankin is a Scottish actor. Born Richard Harris on 4 January 1983 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, he trained at Langside College in Glasgow and adopted his mother's maiden name professionally.
He began his career in Scottish television, appearing in VideoGaiden and gaining attention for various roles in the sketch series Burnistoun (2009–2019). Subsequent credits include Captain Thomas Gillan in The Crimson Field (2014), Roger Wakefield MacKenzie in Outlander (from 2016), Father Hrothweard in The Last Kingdom (2017), and DI Elliott Carne in Thirteen (2016). He has also appeared in Burnt (2015) and Midsomer Murders (2018).
Rankin has a background in theatre, including work with the National Theatre of Scotland, and has a brother, Colin Harris, who is also an actor.
