Biography
Robert Buckner (28 May 1906 – 18 August 1989) was an American screenwriter, playwright, producer and short story writer. He studied at the University of Virginia and the University of Edinburgh, and began his writing career as London correspondent for the New York World. He joined Warner Bros. as a screenwriter in 1937.
Buckner's early credits include the screenplay for Gold Is Where You Find It (1938) and uncredited work on Jezebel (1938). He wrote the screenplays for Dodge City (1939), Virginia City (1940), Santa Fe Trail (1940), Knute Rockne All American (1940) and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), the last of which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story. He later produced several films at Warner Bros. and Universal, and received a Golden Globe Award and Screen Writers Guild Meltzer Award for Bright Victory (1951).
In the 1950s and 1960s Buckner wrote screenplays for Love Me Tender (1956) and Return of the Gunfighter (1967), and created the television series Hong Kong (1960–1961). He also wrote plays, novels and short stories.
