Biography
Rosalind Ivan (born Rosalind Muriel Pringle) was an English stage and film character actress. She began performing as a concert pianist in childhood before turning to acting, appearing on the London stage from around 1900 and joining Sir Henry Irving's company. Her first Broadway role came in 1907 in The Master Builder; her final one was in The Corn Is Green (1940).
Ivan appeared in fourteen American films between 1944 and 1954. She is noted for playing nagging or formidable wives, including Adele Cross opposite Edward G. Robinson in Scarlet Street (1945) and Cora Marshall opposite Charles Laughton in The Suspect (1944), roles that earned her the nickname 'Ivan the Terrible' in Hollywood. Other screen credits include Pursuit to Algiers (1945), The Verdict (1946), Johnny Belinda (1948) as Mrs. Poggety, The Robe (1953) and Elephant Walk (1954). She also worked as a translator and writer.
