Roseanne Barr lets Roseanne Conner say the abrasive thing and leaves it there. In Roseanne (1988), she trusts a joke without adding an apology, a useful quality in a programme that takes financial pressure seriously. We laughed at her bluntness because she never seems to be checking whether we still approve of her. The programme is worth returning to for that confidence and for the actors who can resist it.
Her move from stand-up into Roseanne brought experience of working-class life and motherhood into the family sitcom. She also wrote and produced the series, so her contribution extended beyond delivering the lines. She-Devil (1989), her film debut, cast her as Ruth Patchett opposite Meryl Streep; she then voiced Julie in Look Who's Talking Too (1990). Those parts widened the work, but the sustained performance as Conner gives us the clearest grounds for judging her.
John Goodman is crucial to what works there: his Dan Conner has enough personality to make disagreement feel possible. Barr can be abrasive without making him seem merely patient, and we believe these two can irritate each other while still wanting each other's company. That matters more than the number of sharp lines either gets. Sara Gilbert's performance is a particular reason for our affection for the series, and a useful reminder that its pleasures do not all originate with its lead.
The caveat is the constant trading of sharp remarks, which can become wearing even when the performers know how to land them. Barr's confidence gives the comedy firmness, but it cannot make every exchange equally welcome. Later work included voice roles, guest appearances and further stand-up, before she returned as Conner in Roseanne (2018). For a first encounter, we would start with the original series and watch how much Goodman contributes whenever Barr seems poised to dominate.

Roseanne Barr is an American actress and comedian. Born on 3 November 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah, she began performing stand-up comedy in Colorado in the 1980s after dropping out of high school. Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Roseanne Conner in the ABC sitcom Roseanne (1988–1997; 2018), a role she created from her own stand-up persona.
Barr won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Roseanne. She has appeared in films such as She-Devil (1989) and provided voice roles in Look Who's Talking Too (1990) and Home on the Range (2004). She later hosted the syndicated talk show The Roseanne Show (1998–2000) and made guest appearances in series including The Nanny (1993) and My Name Is Earl (2005).
