Biography

Ryo Sugimoto is a Japanese production designer and art director. Born in 1976, he apprenticed under production designers Yohei Taneda and Mitsuo Harada as an art assistant in 1997. He made his debut as a production designer on the 2007 film Chameleon.

Sugimoto has worked on films including assistant art director on Lost in Translation (2003), art director on Silk (2006) and Babel (2006), and production designer on Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (2009), Unforgiven (2013), We Made a Beautiful Bouquet (2021), Character (2021) and Exit 8 (2025). He received the Excellence in Art Direction Award at the Japan Academy Film Awards for Villain (2010) and Unforgiven (2013), both directed by Lee Sang-il. He is representative director and president of ROJI Co., Ltd.
