Biography
Selena Royle (also credited as Selena Royale) was an American actress who worked in theatre, radio, television and film, and later became an author. Born in New York City on 6 November 1904, she was the daughter of playwright Edwin Milton Royle and actress Selena Fetter. She made her professional stage debut in 1921 in her father's play Lancelot and Elaine and went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, including Peer Gynt (1923).
Royle began her radio career in the mid-1920s and became a regular performer. She entered films in the 1930s and had her most prominent screen work in the 1940s, often in maternal roles, including The Fighting Sullivans (1944), Joan of Arc (1948), The Heiress (1949) and He Ran All the Way (1951). Her film career was curtailed in the early 1950s after she was investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee. She appeared in Robot Monster (1953) as Mother and made a small number of later films and television appearances. Royle died in Guadalajara, Mexico, on 23 April 1983.
