Biography
Sérgio Ricardo, born João Lutfi, was a Brazilian musician, composer, singer, actor and filmmaker. He composed the music for Glauber Rocha's Black God, White Devil (1964) and Entranced Earth (1967).
Born on 18 June 1932 in Marília, São Paulo, he trained in music from childhood and began his career as a pianist in Rio de Janeiro nightclubs in the 1950s. He became associated with the bossa nova movement before shifting towards socially engaged music and Cinema Novo. He also directed films including Esse Mundo é Meu (1964) and A Noite do Espantalho (1974).
Ricardo died in Rio de Janeiro on 23 July 2020.
