Shahab Hosseini gives troubled men enough care and attention to make a quick judgement difficult. His work with Asghar Farhadi is the place to start: we rate the restraint as highly as the emotional force.

The quarrels in A Separation (2011) make it difficult to choose a side and stay there. Shahab Hosseini's Hojjat is as carefully played as Payman Maadi's Nader, Leila Hatami's Simin and Sareh Bayat's Razieh, each given enough consideration to frustrate a quick verdict. Class and religion inform the disagreements, but neither excuses the behaviour. We found this upsetting because the care Hosseini and Bayat give Hojjat and Razieh makes it difficult to dismiss them when the quarrels become uncomfortable.
Superstar (2009), in which he plays Kourosh Zand, marked a major breakthrough at home. That year also brought About Elly (2009), his first collaboration with Asghar Farhadi, beginning the partnership that widened his international profile. He plays Emad Etesami in The Salesman (2016), the third of their films together after A Separation. Later work includes The Night (2021), with its immigrant and psychological themes. The Farhadi films remain our starting point because their social and ethical tensions suit an actor whose restraint matters as much as his emotional force.
Hosseini's recurring territory is the troubled or morally conflicted man, often working-class, and the obvious danger is that intensity becomes the whole performance. What we value in A Separation is the attention given to each person involved: Hojjat's circumstances matter, but he is never simply there to explain a social difference. Hosseini has described approaching a character without judging them as good or bad. With Farhadi, that approach works because the disagreements still leave us free to judge the behaviour for ourselves.
There are limits to what careful acting can do. A few plot complications in A Separation feel too deliberately placed, and even this cast cannot make them look accidental. That is a small reservation about a film we recommend without hesitation, and no reason to overlook how well Hosseini works within its ensemble. Start there, and give him and Bayat as much attention as the couple at the centre.
Biography
Shahab Hosseini is an Iranian actor, producer and director. He was born in Tehran in 1974 and began his career in radio and television before making his film debut in Rokhsareh (2002).
He is known for his collaborations with director Asghar Farhadi, appearing as Ahmad in About Elly (2009), Hojjat in A Separation (2011) and Emad Etesami in The Salesman (2016). For the latter two films he shared the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also received the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor at the Fajr Film Festival for his role in Superstar (2009).
Hosseini has appeared in other notable films including The Night (2021) and has worked as a director and producer.
