Sharman Joshi brings warmth and comic timing to group scenes. We value his earnestness in 3 Idiots, even when the performance wavers; he helps make the students’ worries matter without being the film’s most assured actor.

In 3 Idiots (2009), the friends take one another’s hopes seriously, and Sharman Joshi helps make that affection convincing. As Raju Rastogi, he makes the pressure on the students feel personal. Alongside R. Madhavan’s Farhan, he gives the advice dispensed by Aamir Khan’s character a reason to matter. We were moved by the friends’ encouragement of one another, because Hirani lets them express their affection plainly without making kindness an embarrassment. Joshi’s warmth matters to a film that can be tiresomely keen to tell us how to live.
Style (2001) established him as a lead in youth comedy. Rang De Basanti (2006) and Golmaal – Fun Unlimited (2006) then made ensemble work central to his reputation. His comic timing as Laxman in the latter works through his rapport with the other performers. That combination of broad comedy and emotional sincerity makes the route to Raju understandable; Joshi can be funny without making earnestness seem like an awkward change of subject.
Rajkumar Hirani gives that sincerity room in 3 Idiots, allowing the friendship to carry the serious passages. He also edits the film, and the early jumps in time interrupt our chance to settle into the characters. The supporting performances, Joshi’s included, are less consistently assured than Khan’s, so a convincing friendship does not mean every scene works equally well. The screenplay repeatedly explains what the friends have already made clear. Joshi’s contribution is strongest when their affection is allowed to do the work without another lesson attached.
The later credits include a lead in Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012) and an ensemble part in Mission Mangal (2019). There is no need to treat supporting work as something he should have outgrown. Raju gives us good reason to value an actor who makes the friendship credible while someone else dispenses the wisdom, even if we sometimes wish he were given fewer lessons to absorb. Start with 3 Idiots, allowing for its slow opening and repeated advice; Joshi helps make the patience worthwhile.
Biography
Sharman Joshi is an Indian actor who primarily works in Hindi films. He began his career with supporting roles in Godmother (1999) and Lajja (2001). The 2001 film Style marked his breakthrough as a lead.
Joshi received commercial and critical success with roles including Sukhi in Rang De Basanti (2006), Laxman in Golmaal – Fun Unlimited (2006), Rahul in Life in a... Metro (2007) and Raju Rastogi in 3 Idiots (2009), for which he won the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has also appeared in Mission Mangal (2019) and streaming series such as Baarish (2019–2020). He comes from a family with a strong theatrical background.
