Fi1m perspective

Aamir Khan is a persuasive screen teacher, funny and warm enough to make instruction entertaining. We value that generosity, though his certainty can make a character seem too conveniently equipped to prove the film’s point.

In 3 Idiots (2009), Aamir Khan makes Rancho’s enthusiasm for engineering seem worth sharing, even if the subject itself holds no interest. His confidence helps the comedy, and his warmth makes it plausible that his friends would listen to him. We recommend the performance, though Rancho is too conveniently equipped to prove the film’s point. The jokes are welcome when the advice starts to accumulate.

The romantic lead of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) later launched Aamir Khan Productions with Lagaan (2001). His directing debut, Taare Zameen Par (2007), addressed education before he played Rancho. He insists on complete scripts and works on one film at a time. His preference for socially concerned stories makes the urge to teach in 3 Idiots understandable, though it does not make every piece of advice necessary.

Rajkumar Hirani gets Khan’s most persuasive work in 3 Idiots when Rancho’s advice matters to his friends. R. Madhavan’s Farhan and Sharman Joshi’s Raju give him people to encourage, and the affection between them keeps the educational pressure personal. We were moved by their willingness to take one another’s ambitions seriously, which Khan makes feel like a natural part of friendship. His warmth is essential here: the friendship would be difficult to believe if all we saw was a man enjoying being right.

The film is less sure about when to leave him alone. The music by Shantanu Moitra, Sanjay Wandrekar and Atul Raninga can insist on feelings the actors have already made clear, pushing the shifts between comedy and earnestness too hard. Khan can make those changes without so much assistance. The slow start and surplus advice keep 3 Idiots from being an unqualified recommendation, but his performance supplies a good reason to stay.

Some critics have found his comedy in PK (2014) and Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) too mannered or overstated. That reservation makes sense alongside the moments when Rancho seems too certain of his own usefulness. We value Khan most when another actor’s response matters as much as his delivery of the lesson. For a first encounter, choose 3 Idiots and be prepared to receive a little more advice than you asked for.
