Boman Irani makes officious men funny without making them harmless. We value the comic timing and the flashes of uncertainty, though the succession of principals and businessmen can make his work feel more repetitive than it is.

In 3 Idiots (2009), Boman Irani's rigid engineering college director is precisely the sort of man an inventive student needs to encounter. As Viru “Virus” Sahastrabudhhe, he gives the film's complaints about education someone to argue with. His comic timing and expressive body language make that sternness funny; the flashes of vulnerability keep the character worth watching. We rate him most when both are allowed to remain visible. The limitation is that Rajkumar Hirani makes it rather too clear whose view of education should prevail.
His breakthrough as Dr. J. C. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) established him as a comic actor. The businessmen followed: opportunistic Lucky Singh in Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), manipulative property developer Kishan Khurana in Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006). There is a practical danger in being this useful at playing authority: the parts begin to sound alike before the actor has said anything. Asthana and Virus invite that complaint, but Irani finds distinct ways of playing their eccentricity. We would welcome fewer variations on the principal, without asking him to abandon something he does well.
We were moved by the friends' encouragement of one another in 3 Idiots, because their willingness to take each other's hopes seriously makes the educational pressure personal. Irani's intimidating director gives that pressure a recognisable face, although Aamir Khan's Rancho remains the principal reason the film works. Hirani is the important collaborator here, finding room for warmth inside a broad college comedy. He is also its editor, and the slow opening and early jumps in time delay the pleasure of settling into these people. We would prefer to spend less time being told what these performances have already made clear.
PK (2014) gives him the supporting role of Cherry Bajwa, again under Hirani. Its pleasures belong chiefly to Khan's alien visitor and the simple questions he asks about accepted customs, though the wandering story needs indulgence. Irani has since taken on a different responsibility, directing his first feature, The Mehta Boys (2025). That move is worth following, but for an introduction to his acting we would start with 3 Idiots. Allow for a slow opening and a director who likes to give his advice more than once.
Biography
Boman Irani is an Indian actor who works primarily in Hindi-language films and theatre. Born on 2 December 1959 in Mumbai, he trained in theatre from the early 1980s under coaches including Hansraj Siddhia and was mentored by Alyque Padamsee. He began his screen career with advertisements and made his feature film debut in 2000.
Irani gained attention for his role as Dr J. C. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003). He has appeared in films including Main Hoon Na (2004), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), Don (2006), 3 Idiots (2009) as Viru Sahastrabudhhe, Don 2 (2011), PK (2014) as Cherry Bajwa, Happy New Year (2014) and Dilwale (2015). He has received a Filmfare Award and IIFA Awards. Irani is also a photographer and has founded a production house.
