Biography

Sheila Hancock is an English actress, singer and author. Born on 22 February 1933 in Blackgang on the Isle of Wight, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began her career in repertory theatre before making her West End debut in the 1950s.

She has appeared extensively on stage, winning a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Cabaret (2007) and receiving further nominations for roles including in Annie and Sister Act. Her screen credits include the films Three Men and a Little Lady (1990) and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), and television roles in Doctor Who, A Discovery of Witches (2018) and Unforgotten. She was twice nominated for the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress, for The Russian Bride (2001) and Bedtime (2002). In 2023 she played Elizabeth Zettl in the BBC series The Sixth Commandment.
