Biography
Shōichi Masuo was a Japanese animator, animation director and director. Born in Tokyo on 24 February 1960, he began his career in the early 1980s at Studio Giants before working freelance and joining Gainax. He later moved to Studio Khara.
He is credited as director on episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) and the compilation films Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth (1997) and EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² (1998). Other directing credits include Crimson Wolf (1993), Submarine 707R (2003–2004) and Demonbane (2006). Masuo specialised in mechanical and effects animation and contributed to Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (1987) as assistant director, Gunbuster (1988) and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990). He died in Japan on 24 July 2017.
