Biography
Sônia Braga is a Brazilian actress. Born on 8 June 1950 in Maringá, Paraná, she began her career in Brazilian telenovelas and film in the 1970s. She gained prominence for her title role in the telenovela Gabriela (1975) and the film Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976).
Braga received Golden Globe Award nominations for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and Moon over Parador (1988), and a BAFTA Award nomination for Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. She was also nominated for an Emmy Award and a third Golden Globe for The Burning Season (1994). Her later credits include Wonder (2017), Bacurau (2019), Shotgun Wedding (2022) and The First Omen (2024), in which she played Sister Silva. In 2020, The New York Times ranked her 24th on its list of the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century. She is the aunt of actress Alice Braga.
