Biography

Stanley Anderson (23 October 1939 – 24 June 2018) was an American character actor. Born in Billings, Montana, he graduated with a master's degree in theatre from San Jose State University and began his professional career in 1967. He spent over two decades in regional theatre, including long associations with Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., Seattle Repertory Theatre and Actors Theatre of Louisville, and received a Helen Hayes Award for his work in The Piggy Bank.

Anderson appeared in numerous films, including as the President in Armageddon (1998) and The Rock (1996), General Slocum in Spider-Man (2002), Edwin Sneller in The Pelican Brief (1993), and roles in Red Dragon (2002), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003) and Runaway Jury (2003). On television he had a recurring role as Drew Carey's father on The Drew Carey Show and played Judge Arthur Vandelay in the Seinfeld finale. He also provided voiceover narration for documentaries on National Geographic, Discovery and other channels.
