Stephen Baldwin is most useful when his hot-headed energy has other actors to work against. We rate the abrasive humour of his ensemble work in The Usual Suspects more highly than the broad comedy that followed.

In the police line-up in The Usual Suspects (1995), Stephen Baldwin’s McManus helps establish an ensemble whose members are abrasive, funny and easy to tell apart. His sharp tongue gives the others something to react to, which suits him better than being asked to charm us. We enjoyed his company because he makes the hostility funny without asking us to approve of it. There is a useful supporting actor here, especially when a film gives his energy something specific to work on.
Before that breakthrough came a regular television part in The Young Riders (1989–1992), alongside supporting work in dramas such as Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and 8 Seconds (1994). The career then took him into broader comedy. Bio-Dome (1996) and his Barney Rubble in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) belong to the less critically admired stretch. We find that a less promising place to start, though it should not erase the particular skill McManus demonstrates.
Bryan Singer’s The Usual Suspects gives him the right company and material. Christopher McQuarrie’s dry dialogue lets Baldwin and Kevin Pollak keep the exchanges rough, while Gabriel Byrne gives Keaton gravity and Benicio del Toro makes Fenster agreeably peculiar. The casting means Baldwin can concentrate on McManus’s impulsiveness without having to provide all the group’s appeal. Our reservation about the film is that its people can feel thinner than its mystery, and McManus is part of that limitation. Even so, Baldwin helps keep us interested in who is speaking through a thriller that demands close attention.
After 2001, the work shifted towards faith-based projects and smaller independent films, with mainstream stardom less of a priority. That change is worth acknowledging without treating every subsequent part as an attempt to repeat his breakthrough. We would begin with McManus, with the warning that the film is more interested in keeping us guessing than in letting us know him.
Biography
Stephen Baldwin is an American actor. He was born on 12 May 1966 in Massapequa, New York, and is the youngest of the four Baldwin brothers who became actors.
He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Baldwin first gained attention for his role as William F. Cody in the television series The Young Riders (1989–1992). His film credits include Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Threesome (1994), The Usual Suspects (1995) as McManus, Bio-Dome (1996) and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) as Barney Rubble.
He has appeared on several reality television programmes and is known for his public expression of evangelical Christian beliefs.
