Biography
Stephen Schiff is an American screenwriter, producer and journalist. Born in Detroit in 1954, he grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and graduated from Wesleyan University. He began his career as a film critic and editor at The Boston Phoenix, later serving as Critic-at-Large at Vanity Fair and a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he wrote cultural profiles. He was also film critic for National Public Radio's Fresh Air.
Schiff moved into screenwriting in the mid-1990s. His credits include the adaptations Lolita (1997), The Deep End of the Ocean (1999) and True Crime (1999), as well as Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) and American Assassin (2017). On television he wrote episodes of The Americans (2013–2018), serving as writer and executive producer, and wrote the episode 'Announcement' of Andor (2022); he had originally been hired as showrunner for the series. He was also an executive producer and writer on Super Pumped (2022).
For his work on The Americans Schiff received a Golden Globe, a Peabody Award, two Writers Guild of America Awards and two Emmy nominations.
