Biography
Stephen Wakelam is an English writer and playwright. After studying at Cambridge University he taught English and became head of department at a school in South Yorkshire, before becoming a full-time writer in 1976.
His television work includes adaptations and original scripts such as episodes of All for Love (1983), Gaskin (1983), Coppers (1988) and the dramatisation of Agatha Christie's 'Triangle at Rhodes' for Agatha Christie's Poirot (1989). He has written more than forty performed plays, moving from television to a primary focus on radio drama, often on biographical subjects.
Wakelam served as Young Writers' Tutor at the Royal Court Theatre from 1981 to 1984 and later tutored at the National Theatre Studio. He held Royal Literary Fund writer-in-residence posts at universities in Leeds and Kent (2009–12) and at St Cuthbert's Society, Durham from 2015.
