Biography

Stephen Warbeck is an English composer of film, television and theatre scores. Born in Southampton, Hampshire, he attended Bristol University and began his career as an actor and musician at the Theatre Royal Stratford East before moving into composition for the stage.

He first gained prominence for his music for the Prime Suspect television series and won the Academy Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score for Shakespeare in Love (1998). Other notable film scores include Mrs Brown (1997), Billy Elliot (2000), Quills (2000), Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) and Jeanne du Barry (2023). He has received multiple BAFTA nominations and a Drama Desk Award for his stage work.

Warbeck is a founder member of the band The hKippers and has composed for numerous theatre productions, including at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2018 he directed his first feature film, The Man in the Hat.
