Biography
Stewart Stern was an American screenwriter. Born in New York City on 22 March 1922, he served in the US Army during the Second World War, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge. He began his career in Hollywood after the war and received an Academy Award nomination for the story of his first feature, Teresa (1951).
Stern is best known for the screenplay of Rebel Without a Cause (1955). His other credits include The Rack (1956), The Ugly American (1963), Rachel, Rachel (1968), for which he received a second Oscar nomination, The Last Movie (1971) and the teleplay for Sybil (1976), which won him an Emmy. He later taught screenwriting and co-founded TheFilmSchool in Seattle, where he died on 2 February 2015.
