Biography
Strother Martin was an American actor who appeared in over 170 film and television productions between 1950 and 1980, mainly in character roles. He was born on 26 March 1919 in Kokomo, Indiana, and died on 1 August 1980 in Thousand Oaks, California.
Martin often appeared in Westerns directed by John Ford and Sam Peckinpah, and in films starring John Wayne and Paul Newman. He is known for his roles as the Captain in Cool Hand Luke (1967), Percy Garris in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Coffer in The Wild Bunch (1969), Floyd in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and Colonel G. Stonehill in True Grit (1969). He was educated at the University of Michigan and served in the US Navy during the Second World War.
