Suraj Sharma makes vulnerability convincing without asking for our pity. His urgent, unaffected work in Life of Pi gives the spectacle a human centre; we would welcome more parts that demand as much of him.

Beside the tiger in Life of Pi (2012), Suraj Sharma makes the boy’s vulnerability more absorbing than the film’s explanations of his faith. His Pi Patel has an immediate problem: staying alive at sea with an animal that is under no obligation to help. Sharma keeps that problem urgent without making Pi seem equal to it. We were frightened for him because his vulnerability feels real and the tiger never becomes a reassuring companion. The performance gives Ang Lee’s elaborate survival adventure someone worth caring about.
He came to Life of Pi without previous acting experience, and it remains the performance we would start with. Supporting work in Million Dollar Arm (2014) and television parts in Homeland (2014) and God Friended Me (2018–2020) followed. How I Met Your Father (2022) continued that television career. Early follow-up work such as Million Dollar Arm also raised the risk of confining him to youthful earnestness. We would like more parts that make that earnestness difficult to maintain.
Lee gets persuasive work from him by keeping the practical business of survival in front of us. Sharma has to make the presence of a digital tiger credible, and his vulnerability helps us attend to its behaviour rather than the effects. His performance also holds our attention when the film’s spiritual commentary becomes insistent. David Magee’s screenplay keeps explaining the relation between the ordeal and Pi’s beliefs, reducing the uncertainty that the boy and the animal sustain. Sharma remains convincing even when those explanations do not.
His innocent appearance is only part of what works here. The physical demands of Life of Pi give that expressive face something difficult to respond to, and his unaffected manner keeps the suffering believable. Even when Mychael Danna’s score encourages a reverence we cannot quite share, Sharma gives us the more immediate concern of a boy trying to survive. Start with Life of Pi for Sharma, but do not feel obliged to agree with everything it says about faith.
Biography
Suraj Sharma is an Indian actor. Born on 21 March 1993 in New Delhi, he made his screen debut in the title role of Life of Pi (2012), directed by Ang Lee. With no prior acting experience, he auditioned alongside his younger brother and was selected from approximately 3,000 candidates.
Sharma has since appeared in films including Million Dollar Arm (2014), Happy Death Day 2U (2019) and Wedding Season (2022), and in television series such as Homeland (2014) as Aayan Ibrahim and The Night Agent (2023). He studied philosophy at St Stephen's College, Delhi University, and later filmmaking at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. His performance in Life of Pi earned a nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
