Biography
Sylvia Syms was an English actress who appeared in film, television and on stage. Born in Woolwich, London, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her film debut in the mid-1950s.
She was a leading player in British cinema from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, with roles in Woman in a Dressing Gown (1957), for which she received a BAFTA nomination, Ice Cold in Alex (1958), Victim (1961) and The Tamarind Seed (1974). Later credits include What a Girl Wants (2003) and The Queen (2006), in which she played the Queen Mother. She was appointed OBE and remained active into the 2010s.
