Biography

Ted Knight (born Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka; 7 December 1923 – 26 August 1986) was an American actor. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the vain and inept television news anchor Ted Baxter on the sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977). Knight received six Emmy Award nominations for the role, winning Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Comedy in 1973 and 1976.

He later starred as Henry Rush in the sitcom Too Close for Comfort (1980–1986) and appeared as Judge Elihu Smails in the film Caddyshack (1980). Knight had previously worked in voice roles for animated series and in numerous guest appearances on television programmes. In 1985 he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to television.
