Biography
Tennessee Williams was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born Thomas Lanier Williams III on 26 March 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, he studied at the University of Missouri, Washington University in St Louis and the University of Iowa, from which he graduated in 1938.
After years of limited recognition, he achieved success with the stage play The Glass Menagerie in 1944. This was followed by A Streetcar Named Desire in 1947 and further works including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) and The Night of the Iguana (1961). Williams wrote the screenplay, in collaboration with Oscar Saul, for the 1951 film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Elia Kazan. Several of his plays were adapted for the cinema.
