Thomas Dekker's best work is as a boy other people are frightened for. As John Connor he let us see what being protected costs the person under protection, and his career has mostly kept him in the genre corner where that boy lives.

In Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008) Thomas Dekker plays a teenager whose mother has decided the future depends on him and will not let him forget it. The easy way to play John Connor is as cargo, the thing everyone runs with. Dekker plays him as someone who has noticed he is cargo and minds. He looks at Lena Headey's Sarah the way sons look at mothers who love them too hard, and the programme is at its best when it lets the two of them have it out. The chases are fine. The kitchen-table scenes are the reason to keep going.
He had been working for fifteen years by then. He started at six on The Young and the Restless (1993), did voice work on The Land Before Time and An American Tail sequels, spent three seasons as Nick Szalinski on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show (1997–2000) and turned up on Heroes (2006) as Zach before the Connor part came. Since the series ended he has worked steadily and mostly in the same territory: A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), The Secret Circle (2011–12), Backstrom (2015), a guest turn on Star Trek: Picard (2023). Gregg Araki's Kaboom (2010), with Dekker in the lead, is the one that points somewhere else. We have not reviewed it, so we will only say it exists and is worth knowing about.
He has said of Connor that he "really wanted it to start with where Edward Furlong's performance had left off in T2", and you can see the intention: the sullenness, the boy who has been told he matters and would rather not. What Dekker adds is patience. Over two seasons the fright thins and something harder comes in, and he does it without a speech to mark the change. It got at us more than a franchise spin-off had any right to, because the worry runs both ways. Headey does the worrying; Dekker does the being worried about, and he makes plain that the second is not the easier job.
The reservation is that the career has narrowed rather than widened. Science fiction, fantasy and horror have been hospitable to him since childhood, and they keep asking the same thing: a young man with a secret or a destiny, watched by people who know more than he does. He can do that in his sleep by now, which is the danger. He also writes, directs and makes music, and it may be that the part which finally uses all of him is one he writes himself.

Thomas Dekker is an American actor, musician, singer, director and producer. Born on 28 December 1987 in Las Vegas, Nevada, he began acting as a child with guest roles on series such as Seinfeld and ER, and voice work in The Land Before Time films and An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island (1998).
Dekker is best known for playing John Connor in the series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008–2009). He has also appeared as Zach in Heroes (2006), Jesse Braun in the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and in films including My Sister's Keeper (2009) and Kaboom (2010). Later television credits include roles in The Secret Circle (2011–2012), Backstrom (2015) and Star Trek: Picard (2020).
Dekker has written, produced and released several electronica albums. He married actor Jesse Haddock in 2017.
