Tom Pelphrey makes family devotion convincing in men we have good reason to distrust. We rate the tenderness beneath his intensity, though Task is a reminder that a persuasive actor cannot hurry a slow crime drama.

In the domestic scenes of Task (2025), Tom Pelphrey makes Robbie Prendergrast someone worth staying with while the investigation takes its time. His concern for his family remains convincing even when his decisions are hard to defend. We felt for Robbie more than we expected to, because Pelphrey gives those responsibilities as much weight as his criminal activity. He is the strongest reason to continue with a decent crime drama whose actors are more compelling than its case.
His early television work was in soaps, playing Jonathan Randall in Guiding Light from 2003. Regular roles in Banshee (2015–2016) and Iron Fist (2017–2018) followed, before Ben Davis in Ozark (2020) brought wider attention. He also played Joseph Mankiewicz in David Fincher’s Mank (2020). The recurring demand, especially on television, has been to play troubled men capable of tenderness or humour. Robbie gives his capacity for tenderness a useful purpose, allowing Pelphrey to hold our interest well before the investigation does.
Brad Ingelsby’s writing gives an FBI agent and a criminal comparable attention, making their responsibilities at home part of the crime story. Mark Ruffalo plays Tom Brandis with a weariness that does not stop him seeming capable of the job. Pelphrey makes Robbie difficult to dismiss, keeping the family scenes interesting when the familiar turns of the investigation are not. The programme needs both men to matter before it can generate suspense, and Pelphrey does his share of that work.
There is a limit to what that can achieve. The shortage of humour in Task is a real drawback, and Pelphrey’s conviction cannot make the investigation move any faster. We would like to see more parts that give his humour room to work, rather than calling so often on his capacity for distress. Try Task for the family performances, provided a patient crime drama is what the evening calls for.
Biography
Tom Pelphrey is an American actor. He was born on 28 July 1982 in Howell, New Jersey, and trained at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where he earned a BFA in acting; he also studied Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in London.
Pelphrey first gained recognition for his role as Jonathan Randall on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light (2004–2009), winning two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. Subsequent television roles include Kurt Bunker on Banshee, Ward Meachum on Marvel's Iron Fist, Ben Davis on Ozark (for which he received a Primetime Emmy nomination), and Robbie Prendergrast on the HBO series Task (2025), earning a further Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2026. Film credits include Joseph Mankiewicz in Mank (2020).
