Biography
Toyo Takahashi (高橋とよ), also credited as 高橋豊子, 高橋豊 and 高橋とよ子, was a Japanese actress. She was born on 15 July 1903 in Tokyo and died on 14 March 1981.
She graduated from the acting school attached to the Imperial Theatre in 1920 and began her career in theatre, performing with groups including the Shin Tsukiji Gekidan and the Toho Gekidan. Her film debut came in 1935; she signed with Shochiku in 1946 and appeared in numerous supporting roles.
Takahashi is best known for her frequent appearances in films directed by Yasujirō Ozu, including Late Spring (1949) as Shige, Early Summer (1951) as Nobu Tamura, Tokyo Story (1953) as the woman next door, Good Morning (1959) as Shige Okubo, Floating Weeds (1959) as Aiko's mother, Late Autumn (1960) as Wakamatsu's owner, An Autumn Afternoon (1962) as Wakamatsu's owner, and Equinox Flower (1958) as Wakamatsu's owner. She also appeared in Twenty-Four Eyes (1954) as Kobayashi Sensei.
