Tracy Morgan can make a line sound as though he has only just discovered what he means. We rate him most highly in 30 Rock, where sharp writing and a well-matched ensemble give his unruliness something to interrupt.

In 30 Rock (2006), Tracy Morgan's Tracy Jordan can unsettle an exchange simply by opening his mouth. His delivery keeps us unsure where a sentence will end, even among characters who are hardly models of restraint. We laughed at that uncertainty: a sentence could be funny before we knew where it was going. It is an excellent use of an actor whose broadness benefits from having other, equally distinct performances around it.
The early television parts gave that voice different jobs: Hustle Man in Martin (1994), then sketch characters in Saturday Night Live, which he joined in 1996. Brian Fellow and Astronaut Jones belong to that sketch period. The outsized enthusiasm and physical comedy were already central to his appeal. After the short-lived The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), 30 Rock found a particularly effective place for those qualities.
The writing is sharp, and the cast, including Tina Fey, has room for several kinds of foolishness. Jane Krakowski makes Jenna Maroney's appetite for attention faintly alarming, while Jack McBrayer gives Kenneth Parcell a brightness of his own. Morgan supplies disruption, but the exchanges rarely become a contest to see who can shout loudest. Jordan is a heightened version of Morgan, but the performance still has a precise job within the ensemble.
His voice work includes Luiz in the animation Rio (2011), which makes sense for a performer with such a distinctive delivery. His later lead role as Tray Barker in The Last O.G. (2018) gives space to vulnerability as well as volatility. That comedy can meander, and his likeability does not make familiar material less familiar.
The limitation is that unpredictability cannot do every job in a comedy. Morgan needs writing that gives his interruptions a purpose and colleagues with enough presence to answer back. Start with 30 Rock, and allow its ensemble time to settle before deciding that everyone is simply being noisy.
Biography
Tracy Jamal Morgan is an American actor and comedian. He was a cast member on the sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2003 and played the character Tracy Jordan on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock from 2006 to 2013.
Morgan began his career with appearances on the sitcom Martin as Hustle Man and on sketch shows including Uptown Comedy Club and Snaps. He has also appeared in films such as The Longest Yard (2005) and provided voice work in animated features including Rio (2011) and Rio 2 (2014). He later starred as Tray Barker in the TBS series The Last O.G. (2018–2021).
