Fi1m perspective

Alec Baldwin makes authority convincing, and he is equally good at making thought look urgent. We rate the sharp supporting actor, but his Jack Ryan is reason enough not to dismiss the leading man.

In The Hunt for Red October (1990), Alec Baldwin makes thinking look like work. His Jack Ryan has to judge the intentions of Sean Connery's Soviet captain, Marko Ramius, from uncertain evidence. Baldwin keeps the discussions alert, giving us a man trying to reach an answer rather than simply waiting to deliver one. We were properly tense because he made those deliberations feel urgent. He holds our attention beside Connery without needing to match the other man's ease of command.

John McTiernan's film also shows how far a performance can repair thin writing. Ryan is underwritten in Larry Ferguson and Donald E. Stewart's script, and Baldwin's alertness does not suddenly give him a rich inner life. What it does is keep the explanations involving, even when they go on too long. We want to see him arrive at a decision, which matters in a thriller that spends so much time considering how to respond to another man's actions.

The subsequent move towards character parts makes sense, though Ryan gives us no reason to write him off as a lead. Beetlejuice (1988) helped establish Baldwin in films, and The Hunt for Red October briefly positioned him as a major lead. After Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), supporting and ensemble work became more central. As Blake, his commanding monologue concentrates the precise intensity that can make a short appearance so effective. His supporting performance in The Cooler (2003) uses both charm and menace, though it would be limiting to make intimidation the whole case for him.

Television gave his timing more room in 30 Rock (2006–2013), as Jack Donaghy, alongside the programme's creator and co-star Tina Fey. The deadpan delivery lets the authoritative figure be funny without Baldwin having to signal every joke. The precise timing matters as much as the authority; simply sounding important would soon wear thin. We would still resist reducing him to the voice and the monologues. Start with The Hunt for Red October if those speeches have led you to underestimate his patience.
