Biography
Uta Hagen was a German-born American actress and theatre practitioner. She made her Broadway debut in 1938 as Nina in The Seagull and originated the role of Martha in the 1962 premiere of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. She received a second Tony for her performance in The Country Girl (1951) and a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999.
Hagen appeared in a small number of films, including The Boys from Brazil (1978) as Frieda Maloney and Reversal of Fortune (1990) as Maria. She was a long-time teacher at New York's Herbert Berghof Studio and co-authored the acting texts Respect for Acting (1973) and A Challenge for the Actor (1991). She was elected to the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981.
