Biography
Viola Lawrence (also credited as Viola Mallory) was a film editor. She began working at Vitagraph Studios in Brooklyn as a messenger at the age of eleven and later became one of the earliest female film cutters in the industry.
She moved to Hollywood in 1917 and worked for several studios before joining Columbia Pictures, where she served as supervising editor from the mid-1920s until the end of her career. Lawrence edited Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), In a Lonely Place (1950) and Pal Joey (1957). She received Academy Award nominations for Best Film Editing for Pal Joey (with Jerome Thoms) and Pepe (1960, with Al Clark). She died in 1973.
