Whitney Able is persuasive when she lets a character remain uncertain and a little difficult to read. Monsters gives us good reason to value that restraint, though it also shows how easily quietness can become vagueness.

In Monsters (2010), Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy allow a romance to develop without making either traveller insistently charming. Able plays Samantha Wynden opposite McNairy's Andrew Kaulder, and their closeness remains uncertain enough to feel worth watching. We warmed to Able here because she leaves the awkwardness in place instead of smoothing it into an easy courtship. Neither actor behaves as though being liked is the most urgent business on screen. That restraint is her chief asset in a film whose road journey takes precedence over creature attacks.
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006), in which she played Chloe, had already established her in independent horror. She has often played young women navigating danger or emotional strain, for whom an unforced manner is useful: extraordinary circumstances need someone who seems ordinary enough to experience them. After the lead in Monsters, her career has largely continued through independent features and supporting roles. Later credits include A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) and the television Western Godless (2017).
Director Gareth Edwards gives Able and McNairy room to keep the relationship secondary to the journey. Able's account of working from a treatment and figuring scenes out each day helps explain the lack of conspicuous polish. That approach suits two people who have not decided what they mean to one another, and keeps their exchanges from sounding like an orderly series of steps towards romance. But Edwards's dialogue sometimes gives them too little to work with. The performances become so undemonstrative that Samantha and Andrew are harder to distinguish than they ought to be.
This is a reason to be precise about what we admire in Able, rather than treating understatement as an automatic virtue. She is persuasive within the tentative romance, but quiet acting cannot supply character detail the writing has left out. Her co-writing and acting credit on the short We Won't Forget (2021) gives us a different aspect of her work to follow. Start with Monsters, provided a hesitant courtship sounds like a reasonable use of a science-fiction evening.

Whitney Able is an American actress and model. Born in Houston, Texas, she began her career in independent films, including a role in Age of Kali (2005) and as Chloe in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006).
Able is known for her leading role as Samantha Wynden in the 2010 science-fiction film Monsters, opposite Scoot McNairy. She has appeared in other films such as Unearthed (2007), Straight A's (2013), A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) and Ava's Possessions (2015), and in the series Godless (2017). She was featured in Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list in 2008.
Able married actor Scoot McNairy in 2010; they divorced in 2019.
