Biography
William Monahan is an American screenwriter, novelist and film director. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 3 November 1960, he studied Elizabethan and Jacobean drama at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He began his career as a journalist, contributing to publications including Spy, Talk, Maxim and the New York Press, and published the novel Light House: A Trifle in 2000.
Monahan's first produced screenplay was Kingdom of Heaven (2005), directed by Ridley Scott. His second, The Departed (2006), an adaptation of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, earned him the Academy Award and Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He later wrote screenplays for Body of Lies (2008), Edge of Darkness (2010), The Gambler (2014), The Tender Bar (2021) and Marlowe (2023).
Monahan made his directorial debut with London Boulevard (2010), which he also wrote, and directed Mojave (2016).
