Biography

William Arthur Squire was a Welsh actor of stage, film and television. He was born on 29 April 1917 in Neath, Glamorgan, and died on 3 May 1989 in London.

As a stage actor, Squire performed at Stratford-upon-Avon and the Old Vic. He replaced Richard Burton as King Arthur in the Broadway production of Camelot. His screen roles included Hunter in the series Callan (1967), Thomas More in Anne of the Thousand Days (1969), the voice of Gandalf in the 1978 animated The Lord of the Rings, and the Shadow in the 1979 Doctor Who serial The Armageddon Factor. He was married to the actress Juliet Harmer.
